Lydia Leaf -Loss to Enlightenment

June 04, 20267 min read

Last week we had a special guest who has overcome so much, even losing her sight, to become the artist and felt-lover she is today.

The full interview replay is available to watch inside the membership, but read the overview of the interview below to learn more about Lydia and her story.

Lydia is one of the quirkiest guests we have had the pleasure of interviewing, and despite having faced incredible challenges, her zest for life and determination to adapt to her changing circumstances is inspiring for us all.

This time of year, Lydia can often be found tucked away in her gorgeous garden cabin in Giltbrook, Nottingham, which she described as her sanctuary and where she can get creative. To go outside and enjoy her picturesque surroundings though is something that Lydia can never take for granted. Read on to find out more:

The Challenge That Changed Everything

One of the most moving parts of Lydia's story was hearing about her battle with overcoming many different challenges. These include having to start over with small children and adapt to living in a new area, losing her mum, and her many health struggles over the years.

At just three years old, Lydia suffered a severe allergic reaction which left her seriously ill. She didn't know it at the time, but she would later learn that this was caused by an underlying condition called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. It affected her entire body, including her eyes and ears, and no one knew if she would live or die.

Thankfully, Lydia pulled through, and although left deaf in one ear, she had a long period where the condition remained dormant, allowing Lydia to live a relatively normal life.

However, around 2018 everything changed again.

The condition returned, and since then Lydia has undergone numerous eye operations in an effort to preserve her vision. Today, Lydia describes her eyesight as fragmented. Rather than seeing one complete image, she sees patches, and now only has limited vision remaining in just one eye.

Listening to Lydia speak about her sight loss was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Whilst many people might assume that losing your sight would mean the end of an artistic career, Lydia has refused to let it define her, but instead she has adapted.

Emotional Connections

When you look at Lydia's artwork, you can see that her work is deeply personal, often drawing on memories, family experiences, landscapes she has loved, and people she misses such as her mum. Through her art she is able to hold onto memories and keep those precious connections alive. She puts real personality and emotion into her pieces and this shines through in her work, such as her picture with the cheeky sheep, as well as her characterful crows. Each one carries meaning beyond what we first see.

I loved how rather than striving for perfection, Lydia likes to embrace happy accidents and unexpected outcomes, believing that mistakes often lead to new ideas and discoveries.

She has a wonderful ability to see potential in materials that others might throw away. Old fabrics, silk scarves, tweeds, samples, offcuts and scraps all find their way into her work.

Even pieces that don't go to plan aren't wasted. Instead, they are transformed into something new, whether that's a brooch, a heart, a bird, or another small treasure.

It was lovely hearing how resourceful she is, and a great reminder that creativity often flourishes when we learn to see possibilities rather than limitations, and sometimes the things we think have gone wrong actually give us the opportunity to create something even better.

Discovering Felting

It was Lydia's daughter in America who first got her started with needle felting and no surprises that she fell in love with this incredible craft!

Starting with needle felting, Lydia loved experimenting and enjoying the therapeutic benefits that came with it, but then she discovered wet felting and loved the infinite possibilities that opened up for her, where she was able to create beautiful felted items such as bags, tea cozies, and book covers, as well as artwork. She often combines both needle and wet felting within the same piece.

Lydia's creativity certainly isn't limited to one style of project which really shows just how versatile felting can be. There truly is no limit to what can be created with a little imagination, some wool and a dose of your own secret sauce, putting your creative stamp onto your own creations.

Helping Others Discover Their Creativity

Although Lydia's own artwork is wonderful, one of the things that stood out most during our conversation was her passion for helping others.

She has a background in teaching and loved to be able to share her love of felting with others to see what they could create. She now offers workshops which are welcoming, supportive and full of encouragement, with plenty of tea, conversation and creativity along the way.

And importantly, she treats everyone she teaches as an artist, whether they are complete beginners, trying something new or not, she encourages all to find their own individual style and to just have fun creating. She feels that as a teacher she can give the basic skills, but if her students can then go off and be the master, then her job is done.

Those who have been on her workshops have only positive things to say, so if you are in the Nottingham area, do reach out to Lydia and see what you will create with her!

A Different Pace of Creativity

In a world that constantly tells us to do more, make more and achieve more, Lydia's approach felt incredibly refreshing.

She describes herself as working at a snail's pace and she's perfectly happy with that. Rather than chasing endless productivity, she focuses on creating a sustainable creative life that she can continue to enjoy for years to come.

Sometimes she felts, sometimes she writes poetry, sometimes she experiments with new techniques.

Her story is a wonderful reminder that creativity isn't a race, and I personally love the benefits that we can gain when we take the time to stop, slow down and take the time to create something with our own 2 hands.

Looking Ahead

Despite the challenges she continues to face with her eyesight, Lydia is making the most of every opportunity while she can, and filling her cup with colour, using as many bright colours as possible while she can appreciate them.

She hopes to keep going with her workshops, and to develop kits and try to continue making creativity accessible to as many people as possible.

Words of Wisdom

Throughout our conversation, Lydia showed us what it means to adapt, persevere and keep creating despite life's challenges. Rather than focusing on what she has lost, she focuses on what she can still create.

Listening to Lydia speak, it was clear that whilst her circumstances have and may continue to change, her imagination certainly hasn't. She is such an inspiration that whatever situation we may be facing, we should never let our creativity be dampened by our limitations. We can choose to look at our challenges as opportunities to change and adapt, and when we do, something beautiful can emerge.

She encourages others to just start, and if it goes wrong, it can always be cut it up and turned into something you love like a bird or a card. Great advice for anyone who may be scared about making a mistake!

Lydia's story is a beautiful reminder that creativity can take many forms, and that sometimes our greatest challenges can lead us in completely unexpected directions.

It was such a pleasure to meet you Lydia and hear about your incredible journey. We wish you all the very best with your future projects, workshops and creative adventures, and look forward to seeing what you create next! ❤️
