Inside the Felt Box

November 03, 2025β€’5 min read

Last week we had the pleasure of meeting the face behind one of of our favourite suppliers of felting wool, Olga from the Felt Box.

The full interview replay is available to watch inside the membership, which is now open to new members, but read the overview of the interview below to learn more about Olga and her wonderful business.

Discovering the Heart of the Felt Box

Meet Olga, the creative force behind The Felt Box. Her journey into the world of crafting began out of a simple need for better materials for her own projects.

Olga's adventure into the crafting world began in 2010, driven by her frustration in finding suitable materials for her own projects. What started in her living room with around just 50 colours of carded wool, has blossomed into a vibrant business offering an impressive 160+ shades, perfect for needle felting.

The Felt Box specializes in two wool collections: New Zealand wool and Maori wool. Both wool collections are renowned for their lovely fluffy texture, their ease of felting, and their consistent colour quality. Olga's meticulous selection process ensures only the highest quality wool graces her shelves, making needle felting a joy for crafters of all levels.

Business Growth

Word soon got out about Olga's felting wool, and she quickly outgrew her living room and needed to move operations to a warehouse. As her business grew, she was able to hire a small team, including Emma, a former aircraft mechanic, who is now their order processing expert, and Grace, who manages social media and customer engagement.

Olga never imagined her business would grow to this extent, but she's embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, continually learning and adapting to meet her customers' needs. Together, this small team keep The Felt Box running smoothly, ensuring every order is handled with care and precision.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Olga's dedication to eco-friendly practices is woven (or should we say 'felted') into the fabric of The Felt Box. From reusing shipping boxes to exploring biodegradable packaging options, sustainability is at the core of her business ethos. This commitment no doubt resonates with customers who value environmentally conscious crafting.

I also really love that Olga appreciates the biodegradable nature of wool, which aligns with her values. Her dedication to sustainability ensures that her business not only thrives but also contributes positively to the planet. β™»οΈπŸŒ

Currently they offer these in bright colours, and they contain a selection of wool, needles, and easy-to-follow instructions, but they will also have some neutral animal coloured ones coming soon. They are the perfect introduction to this rewarding hobby and will set beginners up for success from the very start.

The Felt Box's Website

Although some wool and products are available from The Felt Box via other platforms such as Amazon and Ebay, their own website is the best place to buy.

Navigating The Felt Box website is a seamless experience, thanks to Olga's web design, which she has created herself with the aid of Shopify. This move has enhanced both security and efficiency, ensuring that customers can shop with confidence.

The website is designed with user-friendliness in mind, meaning that it is easy to quickly find what you are looking for, be it a quick felt order, needle felting kits, or searching for the perfect gift for a needle felting lover!

The sample boxes and colour palettes are also a great idea and something which has personally helped me when ordering.

Celebrating Small Businesses

During Small Business Saturday, Olga encourages customers to engage with the event, highlighting the significance of community support in the crafting world. It's an opportunity for customers to discover new products, take advantage of special promotions, and celebrate the creativity and passion that small businesses bring to the table.
